Shellfish

Living with a severe shellfish allergy is like navigating a hidden obstacle course every time I sit down to eat. I first discovered my allergy during a family dinner when I was younger; within minutes of a small bite, my throat began to tighten, and I realized how quickly a "normal" meal could turn into a medical emergency. Since then, my relationship with food has been defined by constant vigilance.

The biggest impact isn't just at home, where my kitchen is a safe zone, but in social settings. Going to a restaurant requires a "pre-flight" checklist: calling ahead, alerting the server, and cross-referencing ingredients. One of the largest gaps in public knowledge is the reality of cross-contamination. Many people assume that if I just don't order the shrimp, I’ll be fine. They don't realize that a shared grill or a knife used for scallops can be just as dangerous.

I would love to see more standardized labeling on menus, specifically highlighting shared preparation areas. True inclusion means being able to sit at a table without the underlying anxiety of an accidental exposure. By sharing these stories, I hope to bridge the gap between "being a picky eater" and the serious reality of managing a life-threatening food allergy. Education is the best tool we have for keeping the community safe.
