Nuts

Living with a severe nut allergy is a constant challenge because nuts are hidden in so many products, making every meal a potential risk. Since my reactions are life-threatening and cause my throat to close up, I have to be incredibly vigilant. It can be socially exhausting to constantly poll my friends about their snacks or double-check ingredients at every restaurant, but it is a matter of survival.A particularly terrifying moment occurred during a vacation with my friends. In the excitement of the trip, I let my guard down for just a second and shared a Snickers bar without thinking. Within minutes, the familiar tightness in my chest began, and I struggled to draw a single breath. The panic of having a medical emergency in an unfamiliar place was overwhelming. My friends had to scramble to find my medication while I fought to stay calm. That incident was a harsh reminder that I can never take a "vacation" from my allergy. Now, I make it a point to carry my EpiPen everywhere and educate those around me, ensuring that a simple mistake never turns into a tragedy again.
