Living with a peanut allergy has had a big impact on my daily life. Because peanuts are found in many different foods, I have to be very careful about what I eat, before eating anything, I usually check the ingredient labels to make sure it doesn’t contain peanuts or traces of them. Sometimes foods are made in factories where peanuts are also processed, which means there could be cross-contamination, because of this, I’ve learned to pay attention to warnings on packaging and avoid foods that could be risky.
At school, eating in the cafeteria can sometimes feel stressful. I’m not always sure what ingredients are in the meals being served, so I often bring food from home that I know is safe. When I go out to restaurants or eat at a friend’s house, I try to ask questions about how the food was prepared and whether it contains peanuts. Most people are very understanding once they realize how serious food allergies can be.
I also carry emergency medication with me in case I ever have an allergic reaction. Knowing that I have it nearby helps me feel more secure. Living with this allergy has taught me to be responsible and aware, it has also shown me how important it is for people to understand food allergies and help create safer spaces for everyone.
